Paris baby!

A couple of days in Paris with the Academy for Pop Culture’s students and teachers.

Concept to creation video online (dutch)

Roger at Schwung Visuell was his nice self in offering to make a videoregistration of the Concept to Creation get-together we recently had at the Academy for Pop Culture. The Schwung Visuell intern made himself useful by cutting out the totally incomprehensible conversations where the microphone got lost in the process.

So enjoy:

Career moves

It’s not what you think it is: I haven’t been fired and rehired at another position, I wasn’t casted for a movie, nor have I hired personel and installed a professional kitchen in my house. This is me and Wieger Jan at the Academy for Pop Culture working the cafetaria like there’s no tomorrow. Story is, we promised Sjoeke who runs the cafetaria that we’d help her some day. So she got us those lovely red shirts and put us to work. Now that’s not the reason I post this story here. The reason’s the fantastic photo Marije Kuiper made. Keep an eye on her.

Concept to Creation sign off

Today Sef (Flinke Namen), Victor (Habbekrats) and me spoke about the art of bringing a concept to a product at the Academy for Pop Culture. Video material will be available shortly.

In the meantime you can find my keynote along with other concepting material at this website. Special thanks to Lenno Verhoog and the students from the HKU, who dropped by from Utrecht. We had a great time.

If you are a creator of any type: be it a writer, a musician, a painter, a designer or an architect, the core of your business is getting all those flashes of inspiration, crazy ideas and sketches into a product. The end result may be very different depending on your line of work, but the process is roughly the same. Unfortunately finding information on the subject to help you improve isn’t straightforward. So as a little help to my friends I’m organising a session at the Academie voor Popcultuur in Leeuwarden.

Of course our own students are invited, but to make sure as many people meet that are interested in the same subject, I’ve also invited students of the Minerva Art Academy and the HKU. But it’s not a student only affair, professionals who are interested in developing and discussing the step from concept to creation are more than welcome. Give me a heads up by email if you are planning to attend.

Social Media Tag
To make sure information discovered on the day or after it can be shared and found by all in attendance I’m suggesting a tag that can be used on Delicious (if you’ve found a nice bookmark on the subject), Flickr (for photos regarding concept to creation), Twitter, and so on: please use concepttocreation. That way we can all find eachothers online material.

Warsaw Gadgets

While travelling to Latvia through Poland with Victor Ponten and Albert van der Kooij we had quite some equipment on board. Two video camera’s, 4 laptops, 3 digital cameras and 2 mobile phones, an iphone and a blackberry. The iPhone served as a navigation device as well. Check the first episode in our Croma Chronicles.

In Warsaw with Victor Ponten and Albert van der Kooij we were trying to get a head start by programming the Navigation.

On november 3rd 2009 a select group of students from Liepaja University and the Academie voor Popcultuur will be in the same building at the same time after working on the same project for 5 days.
No coincidence it seems. But if we retrace the steps of every single person, it will turn out it is an absolute miracle that we are all there on that day. We have all made literal and figurative journeys to get there. Parents that told us to follow our hearts when picking a study. Friends that went in different directions. Chance encounters with strangers. Exams we failed, exams we triumphed on. Brushes with death. People that told us what not to do. Fears that almost kept us from doing something. Advice we took. Advice we didn’t take. In retrospect all of us being there is a one in a million chance.

Here we are everywhere

Next,

About me

I'm a t-shaped professional. Interested and knowledgeable about a wide range of things, with a clear focus on identity. I clarify, identify, enthuse, explain and speed things up. In a wide range of settings. From a brainstorm at a University Hospital to an editorial item for Bright Magazine. From teaching young students to think conceptually to helping the Ministry of Economic Affairs explain what they do with more schwung.

I fly solo sometimes, but work together with some of the finest people in their respective industries on other occassions. Be it graphic designers, photographers, code-gurus, filmmakers, project managers or musicians, they all have one thing in common: a genuine love for what they do. Which guarantees both a pleasant project and a wonderful product.
